U.S. Senator Joni Ernst announced on Mar. 23 that Hands Jewelers of Johnson County has been named her Small Business of the Week. Ernst, who chairs the Senate Small Business Committee, said she plans to recognize a small business in each of Iowa’s 99 counties during the 119th Congress.
The recognition highlights the role small businesses play in Iowa communities and their contributions to local economies. By honoring businesses like Hands Jewelers, Ernst aims to draw attention to longstanding family enterprises and their community impact.
“Hands Jewelers is a rock-solid example of the enduring strength of Iowa small businesses,” said Chair Ernst. “For more than a century, the Nusser family has demonstrated a diamond standard of excellence in their craftsmanship, innovation, and community engagement, helping generations of Iowans celebrate life’s most meaningful moments. They are a true Iowa City gem.”
Hands Jewelers traces its origins back to John Hands, who moved to Iowa City in 1893 and opened his first jewelry store soon after. The business is approaching its fifth generation of family ownership and continues its tradition based on trust and quality service for over one hundred years.
Ernst’s office provides assistance with federal agency matters such as Social Security, Medicare, veterans benefits, immigration issues, and military affairs according to her official website. She served over two decades in the Iowa Army National Guard where she achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel and led troops during Operation Iraqi Freedom according to her official website.
Raised on a family farm in Montgomery County where values like hard work were emphasized according to her official website, Ernst became the first woman from Iowa elected to federal office upon joining Congress according to her official website. She holds degrees from both Iowa State University (bachelor’s) and Columbus State University (master’s) according to her official website.
As she continues this weekly recognition program throughout all counties in Iowa, Ernst said outstanding small businesses will be honored for their dedication and service.
