Marching band uniforms, school apparel, photographs, and memorabilia provide a look back at the neighborhood high school that helped forge a strong identity for the northeastern area of Sioux City. The new exhibit, Leeds High School 1939-1972, is now on display at the Sioux City Public Museum through June 4, 2023.
With an enrollment of approximately 350 students in grades nine through twelve, Leeds High School was much smaller than either Sioux City Central or Sioux City East. It was similar in size to small-town schools in the region like Orange City, Iowa; Canton, SD, and South Sioux City, NE with whom it competed with in football, basketball and track. The high school itself was phased out with the opening of Sioux City East, West, and North high schools in 1972.
Opening on January 14, Leeds High School 1939-1972 joined the exhibit, Navajo Rugs 1910-1977, which will be on display through to March 5, 2023.
The Sioux City Public Museum is located at 607 4th Street in downtown Sioux City. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call 712-279-6174 or visit SiouxCityMuseum.org.
