WASHINGTON, D.C. – On May 23, U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-Hull) voted to overturn an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rule that would impose costly, new emissions standards on heavy-duty freight trucks sold in 2027 and beyond. It passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 221 to 203.
“From food and fuel to furniture and fertilizer, Iowa truckers work overtime to keep our shelves stocked and our economy moving. However, the EPA’s proposed emissions regulations on heavy-duty trucks would exacerbate trucker shortages, increase prices for our families at a time of record inflation, and make supply-chain bottlenecks even worse,” said Rep. Feenstra. “Once again, Republicans are working to undo the economic harm caused by President Biden’s failed policies by cutting red tape for our nation’s truckers and keeping the heavy hand of government out of our supply chains. Our families and small businesses cannot afford higher prices and backbreaking costs while inflation erodes their paychecks and budgets.”
The EPA projects that this rule would impose roughly $55 billion in new costs on the trucking industry and the American Truck Dealers estimate that this rule would amount to a $42,000 cost increase per truck.
