Senator Joni Ernst, representing Iowa, addressed the ongoing government shutdown and issues related to federal spending in a series of posts on her official Twitter account in early November 2025.

On November 3, 2025, Ernst commented on the financial impact of the current government shutdown, stating: “The rescissions package saved $9.4 billion, but the Schumer Shutdown is costing taxpayers even more. By forcing Americans to pay $400 million per “work” day for 750,000 non-essential bureaucrats not to work, Schumer’s price tag is $9.6 billion and climbing.”

The following day, November 4, she questioned state-level transparency regarding federal assistance programs: “Everyone knows why Democrat states won’t reveal how much SNAP funding goes to illegal immigrants. The only acceptable answer should be $0.” The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides food-purchasing assistance for low- and no-income individuals in the United States. Eligibility for SNAP is generally limited to U.S. citizens and certain categories of lawfully present non-citizens; undocumented immigrants are not eligible for SNAP benefits.

Later on November 4, Ernst called for an end to the government shutdown with another post: “This madness could end today if Democrats would vote to reopen the government.” Government shutdowns occur when Congress fails to pass appropriations legislation funding federal agencies and programs.

Senator Joni Ernst has previously voiced concerns about government spending and transparency in social welfare programs. As a member of the Senate Republican Conference from Iowa, she has consistently advocated for fiscal restraint and oversight of federal expenditures.
