Senator Joni Ernst, representing Iowa in the U.S. Senate and chair of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, criticized Democratic lawmakers for blocking funding measures related to cybersecurity and keeping parts of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shut down in a series of posts on March 12, 2026.

On her official account, Ernst stated: “Democrats are blocking funding cybersecurity — leaving Americans vulnerable to Iranian-backed cyber attacks.” (March 12, 2026).

Later that day, she commented on continued budget disputes affecting federal workers: “For the FOURTH time, Democrats voted to keep @DHSgov shutdown. As a result, 100,000 FEMA, TSA, Coast Guard, and cybersecurity professionals will continue working without pay. It’s past time to end the nonsense and put Americans FIRST!” (March 12, 2026).

In a subsequent post addressed to House Republican leaders Speaker Johnson and Representative Arrington, Ernst wrote: “Republicans must seize every opportunity to end government waste! Based on my decade of waste-cutting work, I’m giving @SpeakerJohnson and @RepArrington a blueprint on how to save nearly $100 BILLION in any upcoming reconciliation package!” (March 12, 2026).

Senator Ernst’s office provides constituent services throughout Iowa and assists with casework involving federal agencies (official website). In addition to her role as chair of the Small Business committee, she serves on several others including Armed Services and Homeland Security (official website). Elected in 2014 as both Iowa’s first female senator and the first female combat veteran in the Senate (official website), Ernst has prioritized fiscal responsibility during her tenure.
