City of Sioux City recently issued the following announcement.
Learn more about the development of one of the community’s oldest institutions at “History at High Noon: Sioux City’s Free Public Library” on Thursday, January 20 from 12:05 to 12:45 p.m. Attendees are invited to bring their lunch to this free presentation at the Sioux City Public Museum.
Presenter Matt Anderson, Curator of History, chronicles the Sioux City Public Library’s history back to the founding of the Young Men’s Literary Association (YMLA) in 1869. YMLA members paid fees and annual dues for the privilege of borrowing books from its collection. The money raised paid for more books, which later became the foundation of the Sioux City Public Library’s collection. Sioux City voters approved a local tax to fund a free public library in 1875. Two years later, the City Council passed an ordinance that established Sioux City’s Free Public Library and purchased all the books owned by the YMLA. For the first time, Sioux City residents had the right to borrow library books free of charge. The presentation will cover all aspects of the Public Library’s history from the buildings that have housed its collection to the programs and services it continues to provide to the Sioux City community.
