U.S. Senator Joni Ernst announced on Apr. 6 that Mill Creek Cafe of Cedar County has been selected as her Small Business of the Week, recognizing its contributions to the local community in Iowa.
The recognition is part of Ernst’s ongoing effort during the 119th Congress to highlight a small business from each of Iowa’s 99 counties, emphasizing their role in supporting local economies and fostering community spirit.
“Mill Creek Cafe is a soup-er example of the dedication and community spirit that define Iowa small businesses,” Chair Ernst said. “Dishing out greatness for over 15 years, Jamie and Marcia have created a welcoming space where neighbors gather to enjoy quality, home-cooked meals, strengthening Clarence one customer at a time.”
Founded in 2010 by Jamie Wilhua and Marcia Syring, Mill Creek Cafe features a rotating six-week menu with made-from-scratch meals and desserts. The cafe has become known for its warm atmosphere and commitment to quality food tailored to meet the needs of its small-town customers.
Ernst serves on multiple committees in the Senate and was elected on a platform focused on fiscal responsibility and budget improvements. She became the first woman from Iowa elected to federal office upon joining Congress according to her official website. She also made history as the first female combat veteran elected to the United States Senate after serving over 23 years in the military according to her official website.
Her office provides assistance with federal agency matters such as Social Security, Medicare, veterans benefits, immigration, and military affairs according to her official website. Ernst grew up on a family farm in Montgomery County where she learned values centered around hard work and service according to her official website, later earning degrees from Iowa State University and Columbus State University according to her official website.
As Chair Ernst continues this initiative throughout all counties in Iowa, more small businesses are expected be recognized for their positive impact within their communities.
