The U.S. Senate has unanimously approved the National STEM Week Act, a bipartisan bill led by Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa. The legislation aims to boost science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills among students to enhance the United States’ position in innovation and technology.
Senator Ernst stated, “STEM skills are key to fostering a growing and innovative economy, and I’m excited that my National STEM Week Act has passed the Senate to increase opportunities and experiences for students across our nation. Through this effort, I am proud to equip our students for successful careers and fostering the workforce of tomorrow. I look forward to seeing it signed into law.”
The bill seeks to engage students in hands-on STEM activities to improve interest and proficiency in these fields. It also encourages collaboration with industry partners for real-world experience and mentorship. Family and community involvement is promoted as part of efforts to help students understand and retain STEM concepts. Additionally, the act will support state-level initiatives while creating a national focus on celebrating STEM achievements.
Last year, Senator Ernst hosted a roundtable with representatives from organizations such as the Center of Science and Industry (COSI), Kemin Industries, and Iowa 4-H to discuss how STEM education impacts workforce development.
Senator Ernst represents Iowa in the federal legislative branch as its first female senator and the first female combat veteran in the U.S. Senate. Her office provides constituent services throughout Iowa, including casework assistance and facilitating interactions with federal agencies (official website). She also leads the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship while serving on several other committees (official website).
The National STEM Week Act now awaits further action before becoming law.
