Senator Joni Ernst, chair of the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, spoke on Apr. 29 about the contributions of American entrepreneurs as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary.
Ernst said that reflecting on the history and achievements of small businesses is important as America celebrates its founding. She pointed to examples from Iowa and other states, saying their innovation has played a key role in shaping the country.
“Last summer, President Trump chose the great state of Iowa to kick off our nation’s 250th celebration,” Ernst said. “At the Iowa State Fairgrounds, he underscored Iowa’s unique role in the American story. And I would have to agree. Look no further than our Iowa State Fair, where the creativity and entrepreneurship of our small businesses and farmers are on full display! As we continue to strive to fulfill our founders’ promise of a more perfect union, I have no doubt America’s small businesses and entrepreneurs will continue leading the way.”
In her remarks, Ernst discussed how innovation has driven progress throughout American history—from early inventions like the spinning wheel to technological advances in flight and medicine. She also highlighted specific regional stories: “Massachusetts embodies the American entrepreneurial spirit… Nearby in New Hampshire, a similar entrepreneurial mindset emphasized innovation… Down the coast, in South Carolina, Charleston’s small shops and merchant houses lined the streets in one of the busiest ports in colonial America.”
Ernst became the first woman from Iowa elected to federal office upon joining Congress according to her official website. She grew up on a family farm in Montgomery County where her parents taught values of hard work and service according to her official website. Her background includes over 23 years with the Iowa Army National Guard—reaching lieutenant colonel—and commanding troops during Operation Iraqi Freedom according to her official website.
Ernst earned degrees from both Iowa State University (bachelor’s) and Columbus State University (master’s) according to her official website. Her office provides assistance for Iowans dealing with federal agencies such as Social Security or veterans benefits according to her official website.
Looking ahead at plans for July Fourth celebrations led by America250—a bipartisan group created by Congress—Ernst said: “America’s 250th birthday is certainly cause for celebration and I am excited to hear about America250’s plans this July 4th.”
