Youth Art Month (YAM) is a nationwide recognition and celebration of quality primary and secondary school art education. YAM began as Children’s Art Month in 1961, renamed Youth Art Month in 1969 to promote the value of art education for all K-12 students. Events such as the Youth Art Month Exhibition at the Sioux City Art Center encourage public support for art education programs in our local schools and communities.

The Sioux City Art Center will celebrate Youth Art Month with the 34th annual Youth Art Month Exhibition in our Jensen, Everist, and Terra Galleries from February 25 to April 9, 2023. The exhibition features sixty-nine artworks by middle school students, grades 6 through 8, selected by juror Shelby Prindaville, Associate Professor and department head of visual arts at Morningside University. Seventeen high school art teachers from fifteen schools in the tri-state area submitted 356 entries for consideration. The artworks were judged on originality, creativity, personal expression, and excellence of artistry. A public opening reception will be held on Sunday, February 26, from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. at the Art Center. Mayor Bob Scott, Mayor Pro Tem Dan Moore, Interim Superintendent Dr. Rod Earleywine, Art Center Director Todd Behrens, and Education Coordinator Kim Albracht will present awards at 2 p.m.

The Art Center extends a sincere thank you to art educators across Siouxland for their dedication to student success and artistic development. Teachers and art classes inspire and serve students through guidance and encouragement in developing important life-long skills. The Sioux City Art Center is proud to highlight these efforts with the annual Youth Art Month Exhibition, one of the many programs that support and encourages artists of all ages to discover ideas and explore their creativity through the artmaking process.
