The Sioux City School Board has decided that students will be welcomed back in a hybrid fashion this fall.
The first two weeks of school, beginning Tuesday, Aug. 25, will be in a hybrid style. Safety and other measures will be assessed during the third week and a decision about how to proceed will be made then, according to KMEG.
Students with last names A-M will attend in-person classes on Monday and Thursday. Those with last names N-Z will attend in person on Tuesday and Friday. The building will be open on Wednesday for any in-person needs.
Parents also have to option to have their child learn 100% virtually. It is currently estimated that 28% of students will be learning virtually. The district is training 75 teachers for virtual instruction. For the 1,500 households who do not have access to the internet, the district has spent more than $1 million to provide devices and hot spots.
Masks or face shields will be required for students to board a bus or enter a school building.
The district has also received $2.6 million from the federal government in coronavirus relief funds. Some of that money has been spent on masks, cleaning and disinfecting supplies, special supplies for school nurses and gallons of hand sanitizer.
