Storm Drain Art – Call for Artists

Storm Drain Art – Call for Artists

City of Storm Lake recently issued the following announcement.

Water running into our city storm drains flows into our local streams, rivers, and lake.  Pollutants that enter these storm drains can easily contaminate our water.  The City of Storm Lake would like to raise awareness of this potential problem with a pilot project to educate our community about the importance of protecting our watersheds and environment. We invite the public (all ages are encouraged to submit) to create their own design to paint on an adopted storm drain, with a theme of educating and bringing awareness to the public on keeping these waterways clean and free of pollutants.

Criteria and process for applying are as follows:

1.    Select a city-approved storm drain that you wish to design.  See below for approved storm drains.  The design cannot be bigger than 36”x36”.

2.    Make sure your design is in alignment with our mission to educate the public about the environment and keeping our watersheds free of pollutants.  Think about all the living things that rely on this water (people, animals, plants).

3.    Submit your design for approval, making sure to note which drain(s) your design is for.  An artist is permitted to submit designs for multiple drains.  Submission deadline is 5:00 pm Tuesday, March 1, 2022.

4.    Include your name, address, phone number in your submission so we can notify the winners.

5.    After review, the City of Storm Lake will select designs to move forward with.

6.    Artists will be notified of their selection and completion of the drain must be done by May 20, 2022.

7.    All art will be required to have a blue base background, so keep this in mind when you are coming up with your design.

8.    The paint that will be used comes in limited colors (white, black, blue, red, yellow) if you wish to mix paint you will need to provide your own mixing containers.

9.    If chosen for the project you will meet with city staff to go over safety requirements and safe handling of the paint and paint materials.

Please email your submissions to:woltman@stormlake.org by 5:00 pm Tuesday, March 1, 2022.
