City of Storm Lake issued the following announcement May 7.

Following the guidelines of Governor Reynolds’ May 6, 2020 Proclamation, the Sunrise Campground in Storm Lake will open May 8, 2020.  As noted in the Governor’s guidelines, social distancing is required to minimize the possibility of community spread of COVID-19.  Guidance from the Iowa Department of Health and Center for Disease Control will be followed.

Staff has been planning for this opening for several weeks.  As the reservation system opened on February 1, 2020, many reservations had been made before the closure of the facility was ordered by the Governor.  As the facility opens, those confirmed reservations will have priority when possible.

Campgrounds differ in design and, therefore, consideration has been given to the best number of sites to make available in order to comply with the best social distancing practices.  At this time fifty (50) sites will be available to rent.

Through May 15, 2020, available sites are limited to fifty (50) to will allow the best separation to ensure social distancing is practical. Every attempt will be made to accommodate campers that have made previous reservations to be in an adequate site for their stay.  If a camper prefers to cancel, they will receive a full refund.

At this time, self-contained units will be allowed at the campground.  No tent camping will be allowed.  Initially, the laundry facilities will remain closed.  The restroom facilities will not be open at this time.  Any gatherings must be ten (10) individuals or less.  Signage will be placed on site to remind guests of the guidelines.

Information updates will be released when available.
