In Woodbury County, two residents are campaigning for the position of County Sheriff as the current Sheriff, Dave Drew, isn't looking for a third term.
Todd Wieck and Chad Sheehan have announced campaigns for the Sheriff's Office, according to Siouxland Proud. Neither candidate is having a traditional campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but both are doing what they can, especially when it comes to plans for the new jail.
“Right now, we’re in the middle of the detailed planning and drawings and everything is on time right now and it's just focusing on keeping things under budget,” Wieck told Siouxland Proud.
Meanwhile Sheehan is focusing on the best place to spend money for the Sheriff's Office.
“I [want to] make sure I offer a check in balance in that process and ask the tough questions that need to be asked and ensure we are spending that money wisely and that we are building a jail that will last much longer than our current one its replacing,” Sheehan told Siouxland Proud.
Both candidates also have other ideas for the police department.
Wieck told Siouxland Proud he wants to "focus more on training, focus on our budget, on more training and policy and all that stuff [helps] make a better deputy and correctional officer and lower the liability that we might have."
On the other hand, Sheehan is focusing his campaign on the reserve program.
“The Woodbury County Sheriff Office has an outstanding reserve program. I want to see it grow. One of the ways to grow it is to recruit retired law enforcement and military personnel to volunteer a couple days a month to a special reserve unit that they would be utilized as school resource officers,” Sheehan told Siouxland Proud.
Both candidates have plans to continue campaigning until the election in 14 days.
