As Iowa's June 2 primary inches closer, Woodbury County Auditor Pat Gill is gearing up for an influx of absentee ballots.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the county anticipates an increase in voters taking advantage of casting their ballots by way of absentee. Gill has encouraged this way of voting for several months.

He and his staff publicly showed how counting ballots sent in by mail works, from receiving the envelope to actually counting the vote. Part of their demonstration included how issues with ballots are dealt with, including a late arrival.

"If there are any ballots that come in after the election and they don't have a postmark on it, we can go and run a report and it shows us when this ballot was scanned through the local post office on what day," said Steve Hofmeyer, Woodbury County Deputy Commissioner of Elections, according to KMEG 14.

The deadline to make corrections to absentee ballots is 5 p.m. Friday, May 29.
