Sioux City residents walked several blocks to protest the death of George Floyd, who died recently in police custody in Minneapolis, the Sioux City Journal reported.

The protest ended outside of the Sioux City Police Department, with the more than 100 residents chanting "I can't breathe," "Black lives matter," and "Justice for George Floyd" during their walk, according to the news agency.

"It was a really good turnout," Jackie Stellish, a Sioux City resident, told the news agency. "Everyone stayed peaceful and respectful. Local police were on the route keeping people safe and they even provided a large cooler filled with bottles of water at the station."

Floyd was in police custody, handcuffed and pinned at the neck by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin when he died. Three other officers involved were fired. Chauvin was arrested last week and charged with, second-degree murder, second-degree manslaughter and third-degree murder, the news agency reported.

Sioux City Sgt. Jeremy McClure told the news agency that the officers' main priority was keeping the peaceful protest group safe during their protest.

"We know that people are angry and hurt and we certainly understand their feelings," McClure told the news agency.
