CITY OF SIOUX CITY: Online Museum program features WWII battle

Civil war

City of Sioux City issued the following announcement on July 8.

A pivotal WWII battle that recently marked its 75th anniversary is featured in History at High Noon: Iwo Jima and America’s War in the Pacific starting online on Thursday, July 16. The presentation from the Sioux City Public Museum can be accessed at siouxcitymuseum.org/history-at-high-noon along with other past History at High Noon presentations.

To end WWII, America broke the will of the Japanese people and caused the unthinkable surrender of the Imperial Japanese armed forces. A lynchpin battle leading to that end was the battle for Iwo Jima, 75 years ago this spring.

The War in the Pacific is likely the least understood war in American history, with fighting so horrific that those who returned rarely spoke of their experiences. As presenter Russ Gifford describes it, the 36-day hell that was the battle of Iwo Jima is perhaps the worst of those experiences.

Take a look back at the battle, and the war, from the eyes of those fighting on the sea, in the skies, on the islands – and at home.

Russ Gifford is a local writer and instructor. His contributions of national and regional history programs to WIT’s Lifelong Learning Institute over the past 15 years earned him their Star Instructor award and their first Outstanding Instructor award. Among Gifford’s numerous publications is a regional look at a national event – Spectacular Voyage: Lewis and Clark in Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota.

While the Sioux City Public Museum recently reopened to the public, on-site History at High Noon programs have been suspended until further notice. For more information, call 712-279-6174 or visit SiouxCityMuseum.org.
