American Airlines will suspend service to 15 markets around the nation in October, including Sioux City, due to low demand and the expiration of flight service mandates in the federal coronavirus aid package.
The suspension of flights to Sioux Gateway Airport will take effect Oct. 7 and will be in place through Nov. 3, the Fort Worth, Texas, airline said in an Aug. 20 news release. It represents the first step the airline will take in the coming weeks as it evaluates its flight schedules.
The changes come as air service provisions in the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act lapsed. The airline will continue to monitor the markets it serves as Congress considers an extension of the coronavirus Payroll Support Program, the company said.
American Airlines will publish its full October schedule Aug. 29 and will release an updated November schedule in late September, according to the airline.
