The Sioux City Council has received a petition from residents urging that masks should be required or strongly recommended in public places.
“Although many citizens and businesses are doing a great job wearing and mandating masks, we also hear stories about citizens who are not, and businesses who are not asking customers and staff to wear masks,” Sioux City resident Jeremy Pigg said when presenting the petition to the council on Sept. 14, according to the Sioux City Journal.
The Sioux City Journal reports that the petition was signed by more than 300 residents. While masks are required in city-owned buildings, the council claimed they can’t mandate that masks be worn in all public places.
“If we had the authority to vote for it, I would, because I'm afraid we're going to be wearing these a year from now,” Councilman Pete Groetken said, as reported by the Sioux City Journal.
