Two Exciting New Exhibits Open in August at Sioux City Art Center

Genbusiness010

City of Sioux City issued the following announcement on August 06.

Still Life features Sioux City photographer Dolie Thompson’s contemporary still life photographs, a theme she has long explored in her creative work re-contextualizing the haunting universality of memory. The history of the still life as a genre in the visual arts is long and storied. The popular use of the term still life was coined in the Netherlands although the earliest examples of the still life as an art form can be traced back to ancient Egypt. Historically, the term we use in English today, still life, comes from the Dutch word stilleven. The French used the words nature morte to define the still life as an artwork that included an arrangement of inanimate and organic objects, the most recognizable of the genre being flowers, fruit, expensive tableware, extinguished candles, leather-bound books, and ornate textiles. There are many examples of still life art works in the Art Center’s permanent collection, a small sample of which are showcased in the exhibition. Dolie Thompson’s Still Life photographs will be on view in the Jensen, Everist, and Terra Galleries on the third floor of the Art Center through October 31, 2021.

J.L. Goff: Watercolors will open on Saturday, August 14, 2021. Sioux city watercolorist J. L. (Jim) Goff is interested in the natural beauty of the Midwestern landscape. He focuses his creative vision on interesting farmhouses, barns, waterscapes, and trees in his exquisitely evocative paintings of the Siouxland region. One of nine children, Jim didn’t begin painting until after he retired from the Sioux City public school system where he taught for 34 years. His quiet images invite the viewer to linger, taking in the tranquil landscapes, many of which are recognizably beloved scenes from around Siouxland. Jim Goff’s watercolors will be on view in the Community Gallery at the Art Center through November 7, 2021.
