Sioux City Art Center Opens Youth Art Month Exhibition

201

City of Sioux City recently issued the following announcement.

Youth Art Month (YAM) is an annual, nationwide observance celebrating art education for children and encourages public support for quality school art programs. Created in 1961, YAM began as Children’s Art Month for the purpose of emphasizing the value of all children participating in art.

Celebrating Youth Art Month, the Sioux City Art Center will feature its 33rd Annual Youth Art Month Exhibition from February 12 – April 10, 2022. This year’s exhibition features work by high school students, from grades 9 through 12. Eighteen high school art teachers from fourteen schools in the tri-state area submitted 251 entries. The exhibition consists of sixty-four artworks that were selected by juror Nan Wilson, Associate Professor of Art, Briar Cliff University. The artworks were judged on originality, creativity, personal expression, and excellence of workmanship. The opening reception will be Sunday, February 13, from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Mayor Bob Scott, Councilman Dan Moore, Superintendent Dr. Paul Gausman, Art Center Director Todd Behrens, and Education Coordinator Debra Marqusee will present awards at 2 p.m.

The annual Youth Art Month Exhibition is just one of the many ways in which the Sioux City Art Center supports and encourages young artists to explore their creativity and ideas through the artmaking process. Through their art, these students are provided an opportunity to demonstrate ambitious efforts resulting in success that can open doors to endless possibilities in all areas of their lives. The Art Center extends special thanks to the art teachers across Siouxland for their enormous dedication to their students’ artistic development and for their support of this community education project.
