Lunchtime Program Features Local Food Manufacturing

204

City of Sioux City recently issued the following announcement.

It is no surprise that Sioux City, situated in the heart of the largest agricultural region in the United States, was a major food manufacturing center. Join presenter Tom Munson, Archives Manager, for “History at High Noon: Sioux City Food Manufacturing Since 1850” on Thursday, February 17 from 12:05 to 12:45 p.m. at the Sioux City Public Museum. Attendees are invited to bring their lunch to this free presentation.

Names like Palmer Candy Co., Sue Bee Honey, and Jolly Time Pop Corn may be familiar, but other food manufacturers have helped shape the community since the 1850s. Flour milling, meat packing, brewing, and bottling were an important part of Sioux City’s growth in the 19th century. Sioux City wholesalers roasted coffee, ground spices, and made peanut butter. Dairies produced milk for creameries to make ice cream, butter, and cheese. Even vinegar, horseradish, baking powder, and starch have been put out by Sioux City factories.

Protective masks/face coverings are encouraged for those who have not received the COVID-19 vaccination. The Sioux City Public Museum is located at 607 4th Street in downtown Sioux City. Admission is free. For more information, call 712-279-6174 or visit SiouxCityMuseum.org.
