51

City of Sioux City recently issued the following announcement.

After a successful inaugural tournament in 2021, Explore Sioux City is pleased to welcome the return of the Heartland States Basketball Championship to the Siouxland Area. Last year the tournament was split between Sioux City and Sioux Falls, SD. Through the financial and operational support of the Sioux City Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Sioux City Sports Commission, the tournament organizers decided to host the tournament entirely in the Siouxland Area.

Championship basketball clubs from North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Iowa will converge in Siouxland this weekend for three-great days of basketball. The Heartland States Basketball Championship is expected to bring in almost 140 teams with an anticipated 1,500participants and over 2,500 spectators featuring Boys and Girls teams with two divisions; club, and school. Teams will play at The Arena Sports Academy & Siouxland Expo Center in Sioux City, IA and at the United Sports Academy in North Sioux City, SD. Hotels, restaurants, and attractions near the tournament locations will see a significant increase in business.

“For the second time in as many weeks, Siouxland will welcome youth sports teams from across the 5-state region. Tourism through youth sports generates substantial economic impacts to destinations across the United States. The direct, indirect and induced impact of these events provide increased tax revenue and personal income, lower tax rates and more employment opportunities in Siouxland. ” said Explore Sioux City’s Executive Director Kristi Franz. “Just two weeks ago Siouxland hosted the Siouxland Showdown. The economic impacts of that event were eye-opening. Through an Economic Impact Calculator developed in partnership between the Iowa Tourism Industry Partners (iTIP) and CyBiz Labs at Iowa State University, the total economic impact of this two-day event was $1,275,874, of which 88-percent or $1,116,717 was from spending of those traveling to Siouxland specifically for this event.”
