The Difference is Dialogue Series: Latina/o/x

The City of Sioux City will host a conversation centered on immigration and connections through the viewpoint of Latina/o/x and Indigenous community members at the next The Difference is Dialogue. The event will be held on Thursday, October 6 at 6:00 p.m. in the 3rd floor gallery of the Sioux City Art Center, 225 Nebraska Street, where the Turn of the Sea exhibit is on display. It will also be live streamed on Facebook via the City of Sioux City: Diversity page.

About the Exhibition

Turn of the Sea is an exciting opportunity for audiences to see Nancy Friedemann-Sánchez’s largest paintings and installations together for the first time. The exhibition title comes from Volta do largo, a Portuguese navigational term that speaks to the 15th-century Age of Discovery, historical trade routes and, more recently, currents of ocean pollution. Friedemann-Sánchez’s beautifully intricate work is deeply rooted in her Colombian ancestry, knowledge of South America’s Indigenous cultures and their encounter with Spanish explorers. She approaches her work with a feminist perspective and the rigor of a cultural anthropologist, researching historical decorative art to better understand the structures of colonialism and racial identity. Turn of the Sea is curated by Karen Emenheiser-Harris.
