The Sioux City Public Museum’s latest exhibit, New to You: Recent Artifact Donations, features a selection of interesting artifacts donated to the museum over the past several years as well as a few items that have been in the collection for a long time but have not been publicly displayed.
Recent donations include a 1912 etched glass window featuring an image of the Council Oak Tree from the John Scott, Jr. home in Morningside, an autographed portrait of President Harry S. Truman given to Sioux City businessman Arthur Sanford for his support as an Iowa delegate to the 1948 Democratic National Convention and a 1946 banner for Sioux City Post 337 of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States.
Old favorites are a 1917 heavy truck built by Sioux City’s Hawkeye Truck Company (gift of the Sooland Antique Car Club) and a 1930 International dump truck used by Sioux City’s Jensen and Krage Construction Company (gift of Irving Jensen, Jr.). The exhibit also presents a selection of vintage soap box derby artifacts such as Stephen Lalley’s 1970 city champion racer, Wendy VanWaart’s 1990 city champion racer, and documents from 1937 city champion Wayne Johnson’s trip to the national derby in Akron, Ohio.
The museum’s entire collections consist of an estimated 100,000 3-D artifacts, 3,600 linear feet of archival documents, and an estimated 2 million images in various formats. Housing the collections requires 14,784 square feet of storage space on the museum's first floor and an additional 10,000 square feet on the third floor.
New to You: Recent Artifact Donations is on display through August 6. It joins the Leeds High School 1939-1972 exhibit, which closes on June 4.
