WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Reps. Randy Feenstra and Darin LaHood have taken a stand, urging the Biden administration to address key issues affecting the biofuels industry. Feenstra and LaHood, both serving on the House Ways and Means Committee, are pushing for action on developing new markets for biofuels exports and advocating for the repeal of Brazil’s tariff on American ethanol.

Feenstra emphasized the importance of supporting American biofuels, stating, “Iowa leads the nation in the production of ethanol and biodiesel. Our thriving biofuels industry powers our economy, supports our farmers, and generates economic activity in our rural communities.” He expressed disappointment in the lack of engagement from the Biden administration in opening new export markets and addressing unfair trade practices.

In alignment with Feenstra, LaHood highlighted the significance of free and fair market access for American ethanol, particularly in the face of Brazil’s imposed tariffs. LaHood stressed the impact these tariffs have on Midwest farmers, producers, and local economies, calling for their elimination as a priority for the Biden Administration.

The lawmakers detailed their concerns in two letters addressed to the administration. One letter focused on Brazil’s tariffs on American ethanol, noting the disparity in treatment between ethanol exports to Brazil and the United States. The other letter urged the administration to support American biofuel producers in global trade discussions and negotiate market-opening free trade agreements.

Feenstra and LaHood underscored the urgency of these issues, emphasizing the need to level the playing field for American workers, farmers, and businesses. They urged President Biden and U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai to take action in support of American farmers and biofuels producers.

The full letters to the Biden administration can be accessed for further details on the calls for action regarding biofuels exports and Brazil’s tariff on American ethanol.
