U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra has introduced two bills aimed at supporting rural hospitals and ensuring access to care for seniors and rural communities. The proposed legislation includes the Rural Hospital Stabilization Act and the Audio-Only Telehealth Access Act.
Feenstra emphasized the importance of these bills, stating, "These bills are particularly vital for our seniors who shouldn’t have to travel hundreds of miles to receive routine care, for those who lack reliable broadband, and for our rural communities who desperately need access to hospitals and basic healthcare services."
Rep. Jason Smith, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, expressed support for Feenstra's initiatives, noting the challenges many communities face in accessing quality healthcare. He highlighted the significance of the Rural Hospital Stabilization Act in preventing hospital closures and maintaining healthcare services in rural areas.
The Rural Hospital Stabilization Act aims to provide grants to struggling rural hospitals, especially those in the most remote areas, to enhance financial stability, retain healthcare services, and expand service capacity. The bill prioritizes hospitals with smaller patient capacity and those at high risk of closure, allowing funds to be used for various purposes such as renovations, training, and equipment purchases.
Additionally, the Audio-Only Telehealth Access Act seeks to make Medicare's coverage of audio-only telehealth services permanent. The legislation addresses the current Medicare waiver, set to expire in 2024, which enables reimbursement for services conducted over the phone, including patient evaluation and behavioral health services.
