U.S. Representative Randy Feenstra has introduced a new piece of legislation aimed at boosting the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with a focus on leveraging Iowa's agricultural sector. The Farm to Fly Act, spearheaded by U.S. Rep. Max Miller, seeks to define SAF within USDA programs, enhance research and development in this area, and promote the use of the GREET model for assessing environmental impacts.
Rep. Feenstra emphasized the importance of biofuels for American energy independence and highlighted the benefits for Iowa farmers in accessing new markets through SAF production. "Homegrown biofuels are critical to American energy independence and sustainable aviation fuel is vital to the future of air travel," he stated.
Monte Shaw, Executive Director of the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association, noted that SAF could become a significant market for U.S. agriculture if supported by ample feedstocks and models like GREET. He expressed gratitude towards Rep. Feenstra for his efforts in supporting Iowa biofuels.
Alison Graab from the SAF Coalition praised the Farm to Fly Act for expanding opportunities for U.S. farmers and enhancing USDA's role in developing SAF, which she believes will drive rural economic growth and reinforce American innovation.
Geoff Cooper from the Renewable Fuels Association also voiced support for the legislation, highlighting its potential to bring clarity and stability to SAF made from U.S. crops.
The bill has received backing from several representatives including Flood, Finstad, Budzinski, Tenney, Mann, Bost, Bacon, D. Johnson, Alford, Sorensen, Miller-Meeks, and Fischbach.
