U.S. Representative Randy Feenstra, a Republican from Hull, has expressed support for the recently approved Strategic Homeland Intelligence and Enforcement Legislation to Defend (SHIELD) Against the CCP Act. The legislation was passed unanimously by the U.S. House of Representatives.
The SHIELD Against the CCP Act mandates that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security create a working group. This group's responsibilities include addressing threats related to terrorism, cybersecurity, border and port security, as well as transportation security, all specifically concerning threats posed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
Rep. Feenstra stated, "China poses a significant and growing threat to our country. China has launched cyberattacks against our strategic infrastructure, invaded our sovereign airspace with spy balloons, violated our trade laws, illegally manufactured deadly fentanyl, and drastically increased its purchases of American farmland." He emphasized the need to strengthen defenses against China and secure the nation from foreign threats.
Feenstra added his satisfaction with the House's unanimous approval of the act: "This legislation will ensure that the Department of Homeland Security actively works to hold China accountable for trade violations, secure our border against fentanyl trafficking, and counter cyberattacks orchestrated by the CCP." He also pledged continued efforts to prevent China from purchasing American farmland and protect domestic farmers, businesses, and manufacturers from what he describes as unfair Chinese trade practices.
