U.S. Representative Randy Feenstra has introduced new legislation aimed at maintaining access to durable medical equipment (DME) for seniors and individuals with disabilities in rural areas. The proposed bill seeks to extend relief measures initially provided in the 2022 Omnibus Appropriations Act, which prevent significant reimbursement cuts that could limit access to essential medical supplies.
Rep. Feenstra emphasized the importance of these devices, stating, “Durable medical equipment like wheelchairs, oxygen tanks, walkers, and blood sugar monitors are critical for our seniors and Iowans recovering from surgery. However, our neighbors in rural communities face higher costs for these devices and DME providers often absorb these increased prices because of outdated reimbursement policies. That must change.”
He added that the legislation aims to ensure rural DME providers can continue their services without suffering financial losses or shutting down permanently. “This bill would help ensure lower prices for Iowans who need these services and keep local providers in business,” Feenstra said.
The bill proposes extending a 75/25 blended payment rate for non-rural, non-Competitive Bidding Areas and introducing a 90/10 blended rate for former Competitive Bidding Areas through the end of 2024. This measure is designed to address outdated Medicare reimbursement rates while tackling rising supply chain costs, thereby ensuring continued care for millions across the United States.
