Last week, U.S. Representative Randy Feenstra from Hull played a role in introducing the Renewable Fuel for Ocean-Going Vessels Act. This legislation is designed to allow American companies to maintain RIN credits under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) for renewable fuels like biodiesel and other biomass-based diesel, specifically for use in powering ships and ocean-going vessels.
Representative Feenstra emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating: “Growing new markets for biofuels is crucial to increasing demand for Iowa agricultural goods and putting more money into the pockets of our producers. Just like we’ve done with jet fuel, we need to expand the use of renewable fuels across more transportation sectors, including boats and ships, to promote homegrown fuels and support our agricultural community.” He also expressed his willingness to collaborate with fellow Iowa Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks on this legislation.
The proposed bill aims to amend the Clean Air Act by allowing companies to retain RIN credits under the RFS for biomass-based diesel used as marine fuel without imposing any obligations on parties involved. This amendment would align with how sustainable aviation fuel is treated under the RFS.
Representative Feenstra, who serves on both the House Agriculture Committee and the House Ways and Means Committee, pledged ongoing support for policies that open new markets for biofuels while benefiting farmers, energy producers, and rural communities.
