The U.S. House of Representatives has unanimously passed the IRS Math and Taxpayer Help (IRS MATH) Act, a bill introduced by Representative Randy Feenstra from Iowa. This legislation aims to improve the way the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) communicates with taxpayers about errors on their tax returns.
Representative Feenstra emphasized the need for transparent communication from the IRS to help taxpayers understand discrepancies. "If the IRS finds a mistake on a tax return... the agency should clearly communicate that error to the taxpayer and explain why a tax refund is different than expected," he remarked.
Jason Smith, Chairman of the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee, supported Feenstra's initiative, underscoring the need for fairness and accountability in dealings with the IRS. He stated, "Representative Feenstra’s legislation... will level the playing field for taxpayers by requiring individuals to be notified of any adjustments... explain what the error is, and give taxpayers 60 days to challenge that adjustment."
The IRS MATH Act intends to ensure that taxpayers are informed about any mistakes, the adjustments made to their returns, and the reasons for any differences in expected refunds.
