U.S. Representative Randy Feenstra cast his vote in favor of the DHS Restrictions on Confucius Institutes and Chinese Entities of Concern Act, which successfully passed through the U.S. House of Representatives. The act aims to halt funding from the Department of Homeland Security to American universities that host Confucius Institutes or engage with certain Chinese entities.
Rep. Feenstra expressed concerns over activities by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), stating, "From buying up our farmland to surveilling our military bases, the Chinese Communist Party is leading an aggressive campaign to destabilize the United States and undermine our national security." He described Confucius Institutes as a method for CCP infiltration in educational institutions, targeting students and disseminating misinformation.
Feenstra emphasized the importance of this legislative move by saying, "The CCP poses a serious threat to our country, which is why I voted to permanently end DHS funding for American universities that host Confucius Institutes or maintain questionable relationships with other Chinese entities of concern." He stressed that taxpayer money should not support what he referred to as "CCP propaganda" on college campuses.
The legislation aims to prioritize national security and hold China accountable for its actions while ensuring taxpayers' interests are safeguarded.
