Joni Ernst, U.S. Senator from Iowa, recently used her social media platform to comment on federal government spending and regulatory policy. In a series of posts between July 24 and July 25, 2025, Ernst discussed legislative initiatives and her stance on regulatory matters.

On July 24, Ernst referenced her proposed legislation regarding the U.S. Department of Agriculture headquarters building: "Great! Now, let’s put USDA’s fixer-upper HQ building on the auction block with my FOR SALE Act." The FOR SALE Act is a bill she has introduced that would authorize the sale of certain unused or underutilized federal properties.

Later that day, Ernst announced her participation in a White House event: "Honored to join President Trump as he signs the rescissions package into law to deliver a major win for taxpayers. There is a lot more than $9 billion of waste in Washington — time for another rescissions package!" Rescission packages are legislative tools used by Congress to revoke previously allocated but unspent federal funds.

On July 25, Ernst addressed environmental regulation: "After leading the fight against Obama's and Biden’s disastrous regulatory overreach for a decade, I am making it CLEAR that the federal government has no businesses regulating cooling ponds, municipal treatment plants, groundwater, and streams that only flow after rainfall under". This statement reflects ongoing debates about federal authority under environmental laws such as the Clean Water Act.

Rescission packages have been used by administrations as part of efforts to reduce government spending by withdrawing budget authority for certain programs or projects ([source](https://crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/RL/RL33869)). The Clean Water Act's jurisdiction over various water bodies has been subject to changing interpretations through both executive actions and court decisions ([source](https://www.epa.gov/cwa-404/definition-waters-united-states-rule-and-related-documents)).

Ernst has positioned herself as an advocate for reducing what she characterizes as unnecessary federal expenditures and limiting federal regulatory reach over local infrastructure and natural resources.
