Senator Joni Ernst highlighted several examples of government spending overruns in a series of posts on July 30, 2025. Ernst, who represents Iowa in the U.S. Senate, pointed to projects at both the state and federal levels that have faced significant cost increases and delays.

In her first post, Ernst criticized California’s high-speed rail project: "There is no more deserving place to start than the California Crazy Train that was originally projected to cost $33 billion way back in 2008. 17 years later, the cost has ballooned to $128 billion and not a single rail has been laid." (July 30, 2025).

She then turned attention to the Department of Veterans Affairs’ electronic health record system: "The next big-ticket boondoggle is the VA's electronic health record system that has tripled in cost from an initial $16.1 billion price tag to $49.8 billion. Additionally, flaws with the new system may have contributed to the deaths of several veterans and caused harm to others." (July 30, 2025).

Ernst also referenced NASA’s Artemis program: "Wasteful spending isn't limited to Earth, NASA's Artemis moon mission launch booster and engine contracts have already run $6 billion over budget. The real budget is a blackhole because “NASA hasn’t established an official cost estimate.” Call it a Moondoggle. " (July 30, 2025).

California’s high-speed rail project has faced multiple delays and funding challenges since its inception in 2008. The project's costs have increased substantially over time due to land acquisition issues, environmental reviews, and changes in scope.
