Joni Ernst, U.S. Senator representing Iowa, shared updates on local businesses and legislative initiatives in a series of posts on September 26, 2025.
In her first post of the day, Ernst highlighted the growth of a family-owned business in Iowa: "From the early days of planting Christmas trees to pay for their kids’ college educations, @Myers_TreeFarm has bloomed into a business that includes full-service landscaping, greenhouses, a wedding barn, floral design services, tree moving, and pool installation. I was excited" (September 26, 2025).
Later that afternoon, Ernst referenced her legislative work with Sarah's Law: "This is exactly why making my Sarah's Law was needed to protect American lives. Now, any illegal immigrant who causes violent harm to an American citizen will be detained instead of getting released." (September 26, 2025). Sarah's Law is named after Sarah Root and aims to ensure that undocumented immigrants accused of causing death or serious injury are not released from custody.
In another post the same day, Ernst recognized a longstanding local business: "Since 1985, Dutchman’s Store has been a staple of southeast Iowa. I presented their team with my Small Business of the Week award to honor their commitment to Iowa values. These folks represent the entrepreneurial spirit of rural America!" (September 26, 2025).
Sarah's Law has received attention in national debates over immigration policy and public safety. The legislation requires federal authorities to detain certain undocumented immigrants charged with causing death or serious bodily injury until their cases are resolved.
Businesses like Myers Tree Farm and Dutchman’s Store contribute significantly to rural economies in Iowa by providing employment opportunities and supporting community activities.
