U.S. Representative Randy Feenstra (R-Hull) announced that he will forgo his congressional salary during any government shutdown. The announcement comes as Congress faces the possibility of a shutdown due to disagreements over federal spending.
“On September 19th, I voted to keep the government open and prevent a shutdown that would hurt our seniors, veterans, and small businesses. This responsible approach ensures that we can continue the appropriations process, properly steward taxpayer dollars, and cut wasteful government spending from the federal budget,” Feenstra said in a statement. “Regrettably, Democrats have decided that, unless they can spend an additional $1.5 trillion in taxpayer dollars and give free healthcare to illegal immigrants, they will shut down the government. This unnecessary stunt will prevent Iowans from accessing vital services that they depend on to instead advance a partisan agenda. However, should the Democrats shut down the government, I will not accept a paycheck until a resolution is reached.”
Feenstra’s letter requesting that his pay be withheld during a shutdown has been made available to the public.
Feenstra has represented Iowa’s 4th district in Congress since 2021 after succeeding Steve King. Before joining Congress, he served in the Iowa Senate from 2009 to 2021. Feenstra was born in Hull, Iowa in 1969 and continues to reside there. He graduated from Dordt University with a bachelor’s degree in 1991.
