Senator Joni Ernst has used her social media platform to comment on the ongoing government shutdown and to recognize National Manufacturing Day. On October 2, 2025, Ernst posted about the cost of the current federal government shutdown, which she referred to as the "Schumer Shutdown." She wrote, "Welcome to day two of the Schumer Shutdown. Democrats' political stunt is costing taxpayers $400 million EVERY DAY to pay 750,000 non-essential bureaucrats to NOT WORK. Total cost of the Schumer Shutdown so far: $800 million."
The following day, October 3, 2025, Ernst reiterated her concerns over the financial impact of the shutdown in another post: "Schumer’s Shutdown Shenanigans are forcing taxpayers to pay $400 million a day for 750,000 federal employees NOT TO WORK. It has already racked up more than a billion dollar price tag."
In addition to her comments on the shutdown, Senator Ernst acknowledged National Manufacturing Day on October 3 with a message supporting American manufacturing workers and promoting related legislation. She stated, "On National Manufacturing Day, join me in honoring the hardworking men and women on the assembly line building America's future. They’re the reason I’m working to pass my Made in America Manufacturing Finance Act to make 'Made in America' the norm instead of the exception!"
Government shutdowns have occurred several times in recent decades when Congress fails to pass funding legislation for federal agencies. During these periods, many federal employees are furloughed or work without pay until an agreement is reached.
Senator Joni Ernst represents Iowa in the United States Senate and has been vocal about fiscal responsibility and support for domestic manufacturing initiatives.
