A new $50.3 million jail was proposed by Woodbury County leaders, who are hoping it will be approved to replace the county’s current jail.

The current jail, which was built in 1987, has many mechanical issues and would be replaced by the new jail in Sioux City.

Consultants have assessed $22 million worth of repairs and upgrades that the current jail needs in its heating and cooling system alone, the Sioux City Journal reported.

When the current jail was first built, residential-grade plumbing was installed to save money. Since it’s residential-grade, the plumbing in the current jail needs repairs often.

Keith Radig, the county supervisor, said it would make more sense to invest in a new facility than making all of the repairs to the current jail.

On March 3, citizens will vote on whether or not to invest in a new jail, which would be 110,000 square feet and hold 440 inmates. Approximately 230 inmates can be held at Woodbury County’s current jail.
