City of Sioux City issued the following announcement on Nov. 17.
Martina Mathisen, an educational entertainer, tells the surprising stories behind many of our Christmas traditions in her virtual program, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas: American Christmas Traditions for the Sioux City Public Library on Tuesday, December 8 at 7:00 p.m.
Chock-full of delightful surprises, Mathisen reveals why people kiss under the mistletoe, where that jolly man in the red suit came from, why we light Christmas trees, and how poinsettias came to be everywhere at Christmastime. Her dynamic first-person portrayal of a character out of time gives new dimension to the history she shares. Register on the Library's website (www.SiouxCityLibrary.org) to attend the program via Zoom.
"Martina's style of edutainment is engaging and fun," said Kelsey Patterson, reader services specialist at the Sioux City Public Library. "As we head into the holiday season, we are looking forward to hearing the fascinating stories that explain our traditions."
Each year, Mathisen gives over 200 presentations for libraries, senior centers, women's groups, and fundraisers, where she expresses her passion for history by bringing historical characters to life.
