Grass and Leaf Debris Disposal

Fall has arrived and the City of Sioux City would like to remind residents not to dispose of grass clippings and leaves in streets, detention basins, creeks, ditches, or drainage ways. City street sweepers aren’t designed to collect/remove grass clippings and leaves from city streets. Depositing grass clippings and leaves in the street can result in blocked storm inlets which cause local flooding and has a negative impact on water quality as our city’s stormwater flows to local waterways untreated.

It is also a violation of City Code Section 17.08.030, which states that no person shall throw any grass, weeds or other debris of any kind or nature into any of the cement gutters in the streets or alleys of the city. Homeowners are responsible for proper disposal of grass clippings and fallen leaf debris.

There are several options to dispose of yard waste:

  1. Residential garbage containers - All yard waste, including grass clippings and leaves, can be placed in your residential garbage container. Yard waste is preferred to be bagged if placed in your container for easier removal.
  2. Yard waste bags - If garbage containers are full, paper yard waste bags may be used and can be purchased at any hardware store. A solid waste sticker must be attached to each bag. Stickers are available for $1.15 at City Hall, Hy-Vee, Fareway, Walmart, and Bomgaars (Hamilton location only).
  3. Citizen’s Convenience Center (CCC) – Grass clippings and leaves are accepted at the CCC free of charge for Sioux City residents. There is a fee charged to commercial lawn care businesses for disposal of leaf/grass debris.
