The Sioux City Explorers have decided to postpone the 2020 season, vowing to return in 2021.
Six teams in the American Association will play 60 games with fan attendance beginning July 3.
Director of Baseball and Stadium Operations Boyd Pitkin told KMEG that he is disappointed there won't be baseball in Siouxland this season but feels the correct decision has been made to protect the community's health.
"We know that within some people this isn't a popular decision," Pitkin said to KMEG. "We can't please everybody. We know that. We made a decision that we thought was in the best interest of not only the organization, but the fans and community of Siouxland. We'll move on."
Pitching coach Bobby Post said he is also disappointed that the season has been canceled. He has been fielding calls from his pitchers debating between playing somewhere else this summer or not playing at all.
If any Explorer chooses to play elsewhere this season, Sioux City will retain their rights.
