The loss of the federal $600 unemployment bonus stoked fear in Siouxland residents.
Lori Scott, a financial and housing counselor at Center for Siouxland, said she anticipates the number of people asking for assistance to increase.
“I have a feeling there are going to be a lot of people that are going to struggle,” Scott told KCAU. “For the most part, if they’re getting the unemployment, then they feel secure during that time while they’re receiving unemployment.”
The station reported that the region is faring better than the rest of the nation when it comes to the number of unemployment claims filed, but with the benefit basically unavailable, the figure in Siouxland could rise again.
Resident Gail Norman fears its loss could be made worse by a second wave of COVID-19 cases.
“They just need the help now,” Norman told KCAU.
Scott said Center for Siouxland is available to help those who need it the most.
